🌿 A Magical Summer Term in the Woods with Growtheatre Youth Theatre 🎭

As this term draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the incredible creativity, energy and teamwork our Youth Theatre members have brought to Ecclesall Woods over the past few months. From time-travelling adventures to woodland folklore to multiversal gardening, it’s been a season full of imagination, laughter and unforgettable performances.

✨ Seniors (Years 9–11)
Our Seniors have enjoyed a term filled with fun, creativity and exploration. With many balancing their GCSE exams, we created a pressure-free programme of playful, one-off workshops. Together they’ve lit fires and created woodland scenes, experimented with set building, explored Macbeth, and tried their hand at promenade theatre and in-role games. These sessions gave them space to unwind, reconnect and experiment – and it’s been wonderful to see them throw themselves into each challenge with such energy and humour.

🌱 Juniors (Years 3–5)
Our two Junior groups (Tuesdays and Thursdays) wowed audiences with their promenade performances, leading them on wild, time-travelling journeys through the woods. Along the way, we stepped through portals and time machines, leapt from the Stone Age to Victorian times, met poachers roaming Ecclesall Woods, and even hurtled into the future. A definite highlight: a black hole in a pizza box that transported characters across time! The children devised brilliantly imaginative scenes, performed them with confidence, and managed large audiences with maturity and enthusiasm. Their creativity and leadership left us all beaming with pride.

🌳 Intermediates (Years 6–8)
The Tuesday Intermediates devised The Tales of the Woods â€“ a promenade piece where fairy-tale favourites and forgotten folklore characters collided. Audiences encountered Big Bad Wolves, Dryads, faerie folk, German moss people and more, culminating in a powerful protest by woodland creatures against the destruction of their trees. Funny, poignant and beautifully performed, this piece showcased the group’s creativity, storytelling and teamwork.

Meanwhile, the Thursday Intermediates presented The Multiversal Horticultural Show â€“ a bold and inventive promenade performance where audiences toured universes tended by cosmic gardeners. Each world had its own story, from the wacky to the moving, and the show ended in a dramatic horticultural contest where audiences voted on which universal trees would thrive. The group worked together as one brilliant ensemble to bring their ambitious ideas to life – and the laughter and applause ringing through the woods said it all.

💚 Across all three groups, our young people have been outstanding. Their imagination, commitment and ability to collaborate have blown us away this term. Performing outdoors is no small feat, but they rose to the challenge – creating magical experiences for their audiences and for each other.

✨ Finally, a huge thank you to all our parents and carers for your wonderful support. From helping with costumes and props to cheering on performances, you’ve been a vital part of this term’s success.

We can’t wait to welcome everyone back in September for another season of woodland adventures with Growtheatre Youth Theatre!
